Eagan Implements One-Year Moratorium on Large Data Centers

The city of Eagan has enacted a one-year moratorium on the development of large-scale data centers. This decision aims to provide city officials with the necessary time to study the potential impacts of such facilities on the community, including concerns related to noise, energy consumption, water usage, and compatibility with nearby land uses.

The moratorium specifically targets data centers that would consume more than 20 megawatts of electricity or are located within 500 feet of residential areas. Existing data centers and those currently under construction, all of which are under the 20-megawatt threshold, are not affected by this pause.

City officials emphasize that this temporary halt is a proactive measure to ensure that future developments align with Eagan’s community standards and infrastructure capabilities. The study period will allow for a comprehensive evaluation of the long-term effects of large data centers and the development of appropriate regulations to manage them effectively.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in upcoming public forums and provide input during this assessment period. The city aims to balance technological advancement and economic growth with the well-being and quality of life of its residents.
